Intel Will Introduce The i9 Series Later This Year

Posted May 17, 2017

All four will be based on Intel's Skylake-X architecture while the upcoming i7 7640K and 7740K processors will be 4 core chips using Kaby Lake.

The i9-7920X will come next with 16.5Mb of onboard L3 cache and supporting 44 PCIe lanes.

I put all of the scores into one of our benchmark templates, so you can see the scores in a much easier to understand way. As you might expect the Core i9 chips are set to form a new tier of processors above the traditional Core i7 lineup.

The 7740K runs at a base frequency of 4.3GHz and offers a maximum single-core turbo speed of 4.5GHz, while the 7640K runs at a base frequency of 4GHz and a maximum single-core turbo frequency of 4.2GHz. We'll find out more about the CPUs in the coming months: Intel might have cancelled their annual developer forum for this year, but they've overtaken AMD as the sponsor of the PC Gaming Show at E3, and there's always Computex later this month.

Since it launched in early March, AMD's Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 families have blown holes in Intel's midrange and high-end desktop product segments. The Intel Core i9, or Intel Core X Series as the slide says, includes six CPUs of two generations, and they will reportedly launch this June.

The question of whether these would be the answer to AMD's recently released Ryzen series of processors is still a subjective matter, however.

Unlike these Kaby Lake-X and 6-core and 8-core Skylake-X SKUs, the 10-core and 12-core Skylake-X Core i9 SKUs, the Core i9-7900X and the Core i9-7920X will have 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes, which means they will get support for 3-way/4-way SLI/Crossfire support. That being said, it should be noted that the AMD's top of the line processors will feature 16 cores and 32 threads. Although there is no news about the pricing of these chipsets, Intel is expected to keep the prices competitive considering the stiff competition from Ryzen. It is a quad-core chip with the hyper-threaded design. There are also two Kaby Lake CPUs in the works, the i7-7740X and the i7-7640X. No details about clock speeds were leaked.

If this does turn out to be on the money, as already mentioned, AMD is certainly winning the battle of the core count with these high-end enthusiast processor ranges, while also keeping power efficiency ticking along very nicely. The leaked details further reveal that both Skylake-X would offer support for Quad DDR4-2666 memory and it would be Dual DDR4-2666 in the case of Kaby Lake-X CPUs.
