Sony selects director for 'Spider-Man' spinoff 'Silver Sable and Black Cat'

Prince-Bythewood is probably best known for writing and directing Love & Basketball, as well as The Secret Life of Bees, and Beyond the Lights, among a number of other projects.

Prince-Bythewood also will rewrite the script for the film, originally written by Christopher Yost, screenwriter of "Thor: The Dark World".

Sony is moving forward with an entire Spider-Man universe, minus the Spider-Man himself. Leader of the Wild Pack and CEO of Silver Sable International, as a mercenary she is a hunter of war criminals. The character had previously appeared on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Felicity Jones only appeared as Hardy in Amazing Spider-Man 2, never suited up as Black Cat, with the intent for her to appear in future installments of that franchise. Deciding to emulate her father, but assuming the identity of the Black Cat to do so, she mastered acrobatics and numerous fighting styles. The announced Venom movie with Tom Hardy and now this will stand apart from the MCU. THR asserts that Silver & Black, like Sony's Venom, will not be connected to Spider-Man: Homecoming or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prince-Bythewood is a filmmaker who's fascinated with emotional, flawed characters, and I can't wait to see what she does with a movie of this scale. Sony has aptly titled the film, Silver and Black. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing, and Columbia Pictures execs Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing, according to Deadline.

The movie has an October 2018 release date and is looking to start production in the fall so casting should be announced soon.
