Scalise Doctor Hopes for 'Excellent Recovery' Despite Risk

The gunman who opened fire on Republican congress members at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, critically wounding Rep. Steve Scalise and injuring others, had a list with the names of three other GOP lawmakers on him, law-enforcement officials said on Friday.

"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", said Dr. Jack Sava, director of the MedStar trauma center.

The Congressman had been awake initially but, due to severe bleeding, had gone into shock by the time he arrived at the hospital. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said, adding that now, "we are encouraged by improvement in his condition". He ultimately was transferred to the intensive care unit, where doctors began to control his bleeding.

As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future.

He was practicing for an annual congressional baseball game, working out with his Republican colleagues in a park across the Potomac River from the U.S. Capitol, when a gunman armed with a semiautomatic rifle opened fire.

The attacker, who had traveled to Washington several months ago from the Midwestern state of IL, was fatally wounded by members of the Capitol Police who were in a security detail protecting Scalise. The president's meaning was not entirely clear, but Trump went on to say that "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so important".

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said in a statement condemning all acts of violence.

Sava estimates there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's pelvis and says doctors don't intend to try to remove them all, as that could cause more harm than good. The dead man's social media posts indicated he'd violently opposed President Donald Trump and the policies of his Republican Party. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally.

Hodgkinson, who was killed by police during the rampage, contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, spokesmen said Friday.
