US Rep Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious'

The officers were part of a security detail assigned to Scalise because he is majority whip and the third-ranking GOP House member.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center made the announcement on Tuesday, almost a week after a gunman opened fire on Scalise and his Republican colleagues at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

It happened while Republican congressmen were practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he visited Scalise in the hospital Friday and saw him breathing on his own, talking and sending text messages. So he's doing a lot better.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", Trump said.
