School bus companies facing driver shortage in Pennsylvania

The Sallisaw Police Department will be a visible presence during school hours and will be enforcing traffic around the schools and in the areas approaching schools, according to a release issued by the department.

Tillman said some drivers are unsure about whether they should stop on a four-lane roadway. Multi-lane roads with no barriers between the lanes, like some portions of SR 57S, all motorists must stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.

"The unlawful disregard for the school bus stop arm is not an isolated problem", said Puckett, adding it's an occurring problem across the state and country. Amid a reported nationwide shortage of school bus drivers just weeks before returning to school, local transportation providers say they are feeling the same effects.

Motorists who are on a highway that is divided by a barrier or unimproved median (i.e. a concrete or cable barrier, or a grass median) are required to stop only if they are traveling the same direction as the school bus.

Drivers need to pay close attention in and around the schools for kids walking to school and observe school zone speed limits. We have listened to parents' and bus drivers' concerns and felt their frustration. Sometimes a child who is lagging behind comes running up to the bus after others have climbed aboard.

Moore said a route plan promised for the start of the school year was not ready when school started in Martinsville on Monday, August 7.

Watch for school crossing patrols and pedestrians.

Students should remain 12 steps away from the bus, where the driver can see them.
