Lashkar commander gunned down in Pulwama encounter

A Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was on Wednesday killed in a brief gunfight in Bandarpora village in Pulwama district when he was travelling in a auto.

Thousands of people from dozens of villages in Pulwama district Thursday participated in the funeral prayers of slain LeT Commander Mohammad Ayoub Lone alias Ayoub Lelhari.

He said overall 132 militants have been killed by security forces during gun battles in Valley this year so far.

Local residents said the vehicle was intercepted and it led to a very brief encounter.

One security official is also said be injured in the operation.

Sources said the vehicle carrying Lelhari was ambushed at Pulwama's Banderpora area. "His killing is a major success and it has weakened the militant network in Pulwamam", the spokesman said. "Well done boys!" state police chief SP Vaid tweeted. In that encounter, one militant of the Abu Ismail group, was killed.

Last week, Hizbul Mujahideen's operational commander Yasin Itoo, also known as "Ghaznavi", was killed in a gunbattle in South Kashmir's Shopian district.

In the first 16-days of this month, 31 people, including 21 militants, five civilians and five security personnel have been killed in militancy related incidents.

Lelhari's killing is a big setback for LeT in Kashmir.

"Ayub Lelhari district commander LeT eliminated in #Pulwama".

Meanwhile, CRPF jawan Reyaz Ahmad, who was injured in a grenade attack by militants in Budgam district on Monday, succumbed in a Srinagar hospital on Wednesday.
