First Shenmue III Teaser Shows Off New Characters And World

It may seem a little weird to read that, especially considering that Shenmue fans have been waiting an incredible 16 years for this game. The final product is still a ways off and will see improvements down the line. This trailer is the first of many that we'll (hopefully) see. Of course, this isn't all there is to games, as the Shenmue series is highly regarded despite being a commercial failure in terms of revenue.

Each Shenmue game has had a distinct art style and none have particularly gone the route of photo-realism. It could also be that developer Yu Suzuki and team are seeking to emulate the way the characters looked when they appeared on the Dreamcast. But didn't Yu Suzuki say he was going for that 'feeling of nostalgia'? "That's one of the special qualities of Shenmue, and the fact it was one of the first open world games. That theme, that feeling of nostalgia, continues in all the games".

The teaser trailer gives us a look at Ryo, Shenhua, and other new characters we'll be seeing in the journey. So, with more than a bit of trepidation, I took brush to hand.

It's hard to believe so much time has passed since we debuted the game at Sony's E3 2015 press conference. Some colleagues from different media were able to meet him and exchange few words with him, getting a very important information: apparently, Shenmue 3 would not be the narrative conclusion of the saga.
