Animal friends opens doors to Hurricane Harvey dogs

I think we're all united in our concern for the victims as well as their pets. "Tomorrow 100 dogs and cats are flying from Texas to OR and Washington, Saturday 200 dogs and cats will fly from Jefferson Parish Louisiana to Washington D.C., Monday 150 pets will fly who have been driven to Tulsa from Houston to Chicago - and on Tuesday 120 dogs and cats will fly from Louisiana to San Diego".

Wings of Rescue is a volunteer- and donation-driven organization based in Livermore, Calif., which safely transports pets all over the country.

According to news reports, days before Harvey made landfall, many adoptable pets were moved out of Texas by Wings of Rescue to make room for displaced and lost pets in the affected areas. They're also working to transport dogs and cats from the Houston SPCA to other locations in Texas. Hundreds of pets displaced by the floodwaters have been rescued and housed until they can be reunited with their owners. They are deploying extra antibiotics, medications and food to San Antonio and Dallas Texas mega shelters.

Saturday's move included animals from shelters in Terrebonne Parish, Jefferson Parish, Plaquemines Parish, St. Bernard Parish and the Companion Animal Alliance, the SPCA said.

The SPCA and the Humane Society of the United States coordinated in the effort.

PetSmart Charities has allocated an initial $1 million in emergency relief funding to assist animal welfare agencies working on the front lines to help pets and pet parents impacted by Hurricane Harvey. They are providing rescue rigs, rescue staff, and trained first responder volunteers. In the meantime, they need donations to buy kitty litter, bleach, kitten milk replacer, and food. As a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, the ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services. "We deployed water rescue teams and have emergency sheltering and wildlife rescue teams on standby to respond as soon as needed".
