Wenger: Lemar Rejected Arsenal, But We Will Try Again

Arsenal appeared set to sell last season's top scorer Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City, but the deal hinged on their late search for a replacement.

Speaking to beIN Sports about the future of Ozil and Sanchez, Wenger insisted that the Arsenal duo could still sign new deals with the FA Cup holders.

Arsenal looked to sign Monaco forward Thomas Lemar as a replacement for Sanchez before allowing the Chile worldwide to move to their title rivals.

"Yes, we bid €100m for Lemar".

Earlier this week, Wenger had confirmed it was Lemar who had turned down the move, after the two clubs agreed a fee.

"It was not very close, it's very hard for me to speak about that because what I want now is the player to focus on his career, on his season and Arsenal", he added.

"He made a decision to stay at Monaco", Wenger told Telefoot.

"They should score a bag full of goals every single game - we know they have issues in central midfield and can defend better, but if those players decide they want to perform and play, then they have a chance of having a good season".

"It's very hard for me to speak about what happened because what I want the player to do now is focus on his career, on his season and on Arsenal Football Club".
