3 things we learned from win over Nebraska

Posted September 10, 2017

"In the first half, we did a really good job of moving the ball". Lee competed a 35-yard pass to tight end Tyler Hoppes, the longest reception of Hoppes' career, and Bryant carried defenders into the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown run to pull Nebraska within 21-14.

A strong second half performance helped Nebraska push OR to the limit in what turned out to be a 42-35 loss on Saturday afternoon. We kept playing and we had a shot.

Because Oregon is wearing white, Nebraska will wear its home uniforms in Eugene. The ninth-year senior went 19-of-35 for 183 yards, no touchdowns and an interception, with a chunk of the positive stats coming in garbage time when the game was completely out of reach.

Both Oregon and Nebraska hired new defensive coordinators that switched from a 4-3 to 3-4 scheme.

The Ducks needed five plays to score, with Herbert hitting Charles Nelson for an 8-yard touchdown pass and 14-0 lead.

In those games, which Taggart swept, the Bulls ran the ball 67 percent of the time. The Huskers answered early in the second quarter, with a quick four-play drive pulling the Huskers within seven again.

"They settled down and started doing the right things", Leavitt said of the young players. The Ducks needed just five plays and 1:42 to get on the board first.

The Nebraska offense cooled off after their second scoring drive of the half however, and failed to score on their next four possessions. As has happened so often to Riley against the Ducks, though, OR put down the hammer, closing out the half with three consecutive touchdowns. "That was one thing I was concerned with going in".

Fitting. The Ducks did, after all, amass 77 points and 703 yards of offense in the season opener and then proceeded to spend the opening half against Nebraska proving those figures weren't a fluke. "They never let go of the rope", Diaco said.

Herbert was 21-of-25 in the first half for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Life was seen not only in the crowd, but on the sideline as well.

"Matt's a great player and he did a great job for his first time out there", Farmer said.

On the verge of getting embarrassed by the Ducks, Riley did not give an impassioned halftime speech to his troops. His production did tail off in the second half, though. "I watched games in that stadium when I was a kid", he said.

Junior safeties Aaron Williams and Antonio Reed each set or met career bests, as Williams finished with 12 tackles and Reed five. "So we've got to make sure that we cut down on those and execute a little better". In that game in Lincoln, the Ducks ran for 336 yards. They gave us some trouble on some of our stretch plays. "They've got to score at least 78", he joked. "They're well-coached. Their speed was a factor".

One of those quality opponents comes to town on Saturday when the Ducks host Nebraska.

"You know really, really disappointing start to the game", Riley said. It's a little easier to go from practice against a 3-4 to a 4-3 team than going the other way. "They looked real good". The only win was in 2007 when the Beavers beat the Ducks 38-31 in double overtime. While Nebraska beat Oregon a year ago, as coach of Oregon State the Corvallis native lost 10 of 14 games to the Ducks, including six of seven at Autzen Stadium. Especially since the Huskers barely defeated the Ducks previous year in Lincoln.

"Our guys didn't fold when adversity came", Taggart said. "I loved all my time at Oregon State coaching".
