Earlier on Monday, Myeshia Johnson said on "Good Morning America" that Trump struggled to remember her husband's name. On Tuesday, Trump called the family of Sgt. Johnson and according to Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson, Trump told Myeshia Johnson that her husband "knew what he signed up for".
Wilson, who is close to Johnson's family and was in the auto when Trump's call came, claimed that Trump said Johnson "knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurts".
La David Johnson, and three other USA soldiers, were killed in combat in Niger on October 4 after ISIS-linked militants attacked them, according to the Associated Press.
The president has for a week now disputed details of his phone call with the widow, Myeshia Johnson, that were first offered by Rep. Frederica S. Wilson (D-Fla.); on Monday morning, Johnson confirmed that version of events, and in turn drew Trump's tweeted retort.More news: Nationwide vegetable recall hits Walmart, Trader Joe's, Target
Last week, Trump's chief of staff said he was "stunned" and "broken-hearted" by the criticism of the president's phone call.
The White House has denied Trump told the widow that Johnson "knew what he signed up for" and the claim he forgot the fallen soldier's name during the call.
Trump tweeted Wilson "fabricated" his statement and the fight escalated through the week.
She said he then had her husband's name on a report in front of him. "They told me there was a massive gunfire and that my husband, as of October 4 was missing", she said. In return, Wilson told the New York Times that the White House "is full of white supremacists". "It made me cry, because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and couldn't remember my husband's name". Wilson was riding with Johnson's family to meet the body and heard the call on speakerphone.More news: Kohli scores(121 runs) 31st century in his 200 ODI match
Johnson said Monday that Wilson's account was accurate. "I don't know what's in that box". She wants to see his body to confirm it's him, but the military has not allowed that, she said.
"I need to see him so I will know that that is my husband".
Kelly, a retired Marine general, also said Wilson took credit at an FBI building dedication for securing federal funding for its construction. She stated she has nothing to say to Trump now. And Johnson said her uncle-in-law was Wilson's elementary school principal.
She added, "I think that he has to admit what he did was incorrect in terms of the speech he mischaracterized. It could be empty for all I know".More news: Storm Brian causes major flooding in Limerick
