Niantic is developing a Harry Potter AR game

Posted November 09, 2017

Warner Bros and Niantic are working collaboratively with Portkey Games, a fairly new game label that is dedicated to bringing Harry Potter to the real world on mobile devices.

Rumors of a Harry Potter mobile game previously surfaced a year ago when Niantic announced it had acquired the rights to the app.

Proper post-release support or not, I think it's a safe bet that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be one of the biggest stories of 2018.

That's about all we know right now but we've reached out to contacts at both Warner Bros. and Niantic to find out more. Interactive Entertainment, said in a statement.

"Wizards United", will be an AR mobile game allowing players to explore the actual environment around them while experiencing J.K. Rowling's beloved universe. This is, of course, all speculation on our part, but we wouldn't be surprised if the game lends heavily from Niantic's Pokemon GO. Named after the magical item from the book and movie series, Portkey Games will oversee the launch of "a series of mobile and console game experiences".

With the tried-and-true Harry Potter: Spells app no longer being supported on iOS, this game will be a welcome addition on any witch or wizard's phone.

Whether it will have the same boom in popularity that Pokémon Go enjoyed is a whole other thing entirely. As rumors already suggested, additional sources are now confirming that Niantic is attempting to strike gold a second time with the Harry Potter franchise.
