Russian fighter jet performs 'unsafe' 24-minute intercept of U.S. aircraft

A Russian fighter jet made an "unsafe" intercept of an American plane, causing the aircraft to make a 15-degree roll through "violent turbulence" over the Black Sea Saturday, the Pentagon said. The incident reportedly lasted 24 minutes.

In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said: "After moving closer, the Russian fighter jet flew over the object and visually identified it was an American reconnaissance aircraft P8A Poseidon".

After the US accused Russia of buzzing one of its jets in an "unsafe" way over the Black Sea, a decorated Russian general has fired back, saying American airmen had no business flying in these European waters to begin with.

Moscow justified the actions of the fighter jet by saying that the American aircraft was on course to illegally enter Russian airspace.

US and Russian aircraft often have encounters in the region, some of which the United States has slammed as unsafe and/or unprofessional.

"The US aircraft was operating in worldwide airspace and did nothing to provoke this Russian behavior".

This incident comes almost six months after a Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a U.S. RC-135 aircraft over the Baltic Sea by flying within five feet of it. The U.S. Navy deemed the interaction safe.

"The U.S. aircraft was operating in worldwide airspace and did nothing to provoke this Russian behavior", Pentagon spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, told CNN.
