Apple Pay Cash rolls out alongside peer-to-peer payments

New patches bring a bunch of fixes and features, but unfortunately they can also introduce more problems than they fix.

Apple has released iOS 11.2, pushing out the major iPhone and iPad update in what appears to be an early launch to address devices affected by the December 2 crash bug. It was originally supposed to launch with iOS 11, the latest version of the operating system underlying the iPhone, which Apple released in September. Apple announced it in June during its developer's conference. Transfers go straight to your virtual Pay Cash card, so there's no need for additional apps.

Apple Pay Cash lets users send cash directly within Messages or even ask Siri to pay someone. You can then choose what you want to do with the money once it is received. If you use a credit card, there is a 3% fee on each transaction, which can be avoided altogether by using a debit card. The service links to your bank debit to cover charges that exceed whatever is in your Apple Pay Cash account. However, on the receiving end, your payments will be stored in the Apple Pay Cash card in the Wallet app. "We accept digital money in almost all fiscal functions - from purchasing bonds and stocks, to managing checking and savings accounts, to simply splitting a dinner bill - removing the need for physical money".

Business Insider characterizes Apple Pay Cash as a "Venmo Killer", which remains to be seen. But Apple Pay Cash is different. Over a seven-day period, you can add a maximum of $10,000.

No more excuses for that "friend" who doesn't carry cash.

Despite the limits, it could still help you eliminate the hassle of paying through the paper currency when paying your friends for stuff.
