31 days until the Pittsburgh Pirates have their first spring workout

Not long after the Astros spent the afternoon at a jam-packed Minute Maid Park for the annual Fanfest, general manager Jeff Luhnow was able to finalize a major trade to land starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pirates. MLB.com's Jon Morosi even reported Wednesday the Pirates and Astros had agreed on a deal, though that turned out not to be the case at that time. Cole will now enter the Astros' rotation as a top-4 starter. The former No. 1 overall pick was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA last eason throwing 203 innings and compiling a 196/55 K/BB ratio. The reigning World Series champions have pitching depth that includes Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Charlie Morton, Brad Peacock, Collin McHugh and a slew of prospects. In his career, he is 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA. "Colin is an intelligent, hard-working player who made an adjustment to his swing and approach last season".

Gerrit Cole is heading to Houston.

The New York Yankees had been among the teams mentioned in recent trade speculation involving Cole.

Martin, 21, was an eighth-round draft pick by the Astros in 2013. His career major league ERA of 4.52 is not eye-popping, but he was dominant in the minor leagues for the Astros across all levels. Musgrove, and have already appeared in the major leagues and should contribute in Pittsburgh nearly immediately. Additionally, he averaged 8.69 strikeouts per nine innings with a 3.1 fWAR - the second-best mark of his career.

Cole probably is only the first domino to fall for the Pirates, who have triggered another roster retooling phase.

"We can grow with these players, and I will tell you right now this group of players is going to show up every day with the intent to win that night's game and look up in September and fight and do everything they can to put us in position to get there sooner than people think we can", Huntington said.
