Klopp refutes Van Dijk weight-loss claims

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed the reason why he didn't spend any of Philippe Coutinho's £145million transfer fee following the Brazilian's move to Barcelona.

"It is quite hard because our defending style - and I know how this sounds - is different to Southampton or to Holland so that's why it makes so much sense you get used to it".

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has shared his honest opinion on £75m signing Virgil van Dijk ahead of Sunday's mouth-watering Premier League clash against Spurs.

And Carragher suggested it could be because Van Dijk is not at his physical best. West Brom was a bad game of the whole team.

Klopp went on to tell reporters that he is "very happy" with Van Dijk's contribution so far, and that the player is merely getting used to his new surroundings.

"When Virgil came here he was not match fit because he had a long injury, then he played, then he was injured, then the transfer was kind of an open case and he didn't play for Southampton". So, it has not been a consistent season [for him].

Liverpool host Tottenham this weekend with a dual goal: to propel themselves further away from their opponents in the top-four chase and make amends for their humiliation in the reverse fixture.

He said that Liverpool therefore had "the opportunity" to start Lovren and Matip after the former had been "ill before", noting that the duo were "two completely fit players".

"It is just exactly as I expected it would be: a few ups and downs. You miss a player for a week and you think "OK, we need another player", he is quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

"You want to do better and have longer runs in the cup competitions". But also in terms of the atmosphere around the club after recent results, that game is probably worth more than three points. "Maybe that's to do with not having a pre-season, not playing too many games for Southampton".
