Posted February 06, 2018

Amtrak said the train carrying 139 passengers and eight crew was travelling between NY and Miami when it hit the other train, operated by CSX, and derailed near Columbia on Sunday morning. And 116 people were taken to four hospitals, according to the governor.

Amtrak's train with almost 150 people traveled from NY to Miami and moved at 95 km / h as it crashed into CSX's freight train, which had stopped at a side track.

In a statement, Amtrak said CSX owns and controls the Columbia Subdivision tracks where the crash occurred, including overseeing the dispatching of trains and signal systems.

Authorities estimated some 5,000 gallons of fuel were spilled, however, the spillage poses "no threat to the public at the time", Lexington County spokeman Harrison Cahill told CNN.

The coroner's office confirmed that two people were killed and both appeared to be Amtrak personnel.

The Amtrak train's lead engine, as well as some passenger cars, were derailed.

McMaster said the CSX freight train was stationary and "awaiting a later movement" at the time it was struck by the passenger train - which was traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour.

Among the injured, one was in critical condition, two were listed as serious, while the others having minor injuries like cuts and bruises, said Steve Shelton, Palmetto health director of emergency preparedness. The CSX freight train was empty, he said.

The American Red Cross sent rescue workers to the scene of the collision, and emergency services say all passengers have been evacuated from the train.

The latest fatal crash on America's rail network is the seventh since 2013 and the second in a week - after an Amtrak carrying members of Congress collided with a truck in Virginia on Wednesday.
