Gowda said the country was seeing a "revival and resurgence" of the Congress starting with Gujarat and the by-polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and "the cutting to size of the BJP due to its corruption and non-performance".

The results further indicate that the Congress has completely ceded ground in the Northeast, which was once considered its loyal bastion.

Earlier, two exit polls had predicted that the BJP will dislodge the CPI (M) in Tripura while a third exit poll claimed a close fight.

Taking about the victory in the state of Tripura and Nagaland, Prime Minister Modi said that now the time has come when the election analysts in India need to understand the journey from "No one to One".

"We met the Governor and sought his invitation to the single largest party to be called first to form the government as per convention", former Union minister Nath said.

"Tripura voters have given their mandate for a BJP-IPTF government in the state".

"The Congress party has shrunk to its lowest ever size ever". Senior party leaders Ahmed Patel and Kamal Nath are in the state capital of Shillong, working out possible tie-ups with Independent MLAs in a bid to form a government.

He added that the outcome of elections in the northeastern states will not affect poll results of Karnataka. Despite the low score by BJP, it is certain that both the parties will form a coalition government given their alliance. The previous Communist government had streamlined land ownership rights for the tribes, but it had failed to deliver any subsequent reforms. People of Meghalaya have trusted Congress yet again but the party's existence in the other two states has been threatened with the verdict.
