Andrew Lincoln to Exit AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ in Season 9

Posted May 31, 2018

Andrew Lincoln, the main star of "The Walking Dead", is reportedly leaving the show after Season 9, according to ComicBook.com citing multiple sources.

Collider reports that AMC has offered Norman Reedus, who plays Darryl Dixon, a substantial raise to keep him on the show's roster and to move into the lead role. However, Chandler Riggs, the actor who played Carl Grimes up until his character's death in season 8, may have already suggested the series would be ending soon. Rick Grimes is one of the most iconic comic book characters in recent memory, which has translated to television. The Walking Dead was created to be a zombie apocalypse story that ran without definitive end, and while TV operates by a vastly different set of rules, it's in Walking Dead's DNA to a story that's bigger than just one man.

There are now no exact details about how Lincoln will exit the show but THR reports that it will be "similar" to co-star Lauren Cohan's departure.

Lincoln, Reedus, Lauren Cohan, and Danai Gurira are all set to return for series nine, which is now in production.

Rick was the first character we met in the pilot, we saw the new post-apocalyptic world through his eyes when he woke from a coma, and we have all followed his journey for the past eight seasons.

While it's unsurprising that Lincoln might want to leave The Walking Dead after almost a decade of playing that single role, Rick has been at the center of the show since the very beginning.

Fans of the series have often showed their support for Daryl, namely with campaigns against killing off the loveable character. Can the show survive without its lead?

Outgoing Walking Dead showrunner Scott M. Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter in April that season nine and beyond will be a different chapter in the show's history. The show is expected to return this October to AMC.

Lauren Cohan, too, will remain firmly aboard The Walking Dead's cast, even though she's publicly been bargaining for a better contract on social media.
