Robert De Niro yells 'F--k Trump' at Tony Awards

Posted June 11, 2018

Angels in America was a major frontrunner at the 72nd annual ceremony, where it was nominated for 11 awards - the most for any play in Tony history - including Best Revival and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for Nathan Lane.

When hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban came back onstage, they were dressed in each other's characters in the musicals they were in - with her in a beard and him in a short waitress outfit. Many critics have tapped "The Band's Visit" as their odds-on favorite to be crowned best new musical.

But musical Mean Girls, based on the 2004 film, went away empty-handed after receiving 12 nominations.

Bruce Springsteen, the recipient of a special Tony Award and perhaps the most famous name inside Radio City Music Hall, was introduced by his friend Billy Joel.

"Thanks for making me so welcome on your block", Springsteen said, accepting his award for his phenomenally successful solo show. Tragic for those of us who can't afford tickets to his show, but on the plus side, it was significantly shorter than the E Street Band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech.

"Robert De Niro just yelled "F*** Trump" on national television before introducing Bruce Springsteen, and I am absolutely here for it", one user wrote.

Many congrats to Stachel on his first Tony win!

The revival of Carousel won two awards - choreography and for Lindsay Mendez, who won best featured actress in a musical.

"Harry Potter", a record-setting $69 million two-part production set 19 years after the last of J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels about the boy wizard, won a total of six Tonys including best new play and best director. The show will also feature a special performance from the 2017 Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen. They turned that into a playful song.

"Your biggest obstacle", said Stachel of "The Band's Visit", addressing young artists all across the nation, "may turn out to be your objective". "Your biggest obstacle may turn into your goal", he said to the audience as he accepted the Tony.

"Inarticulate, Low IQ Robert DeNiro screams "F- Trump" on The Tony Awards and gets a standing ovation". His admission letter to Hogwarts is undoubtedly on its way. He also looked touched, but mostly that he wanted to use a little of that Harry Potter magic to disappear. I have avoided so many events with them for so many years of my life.

'I just have one thing to say, ' he said as he took the podium. "Happy birthday, Judy Garland!"
