Lee will also meet with Trump ahead of Tuesday's summit, which is slated to begin at 9:00 A.M. local time (9:00 P.M. Monday night Eastern time).

During a security lockdown inside and outside Singapore's five-star St Regis hotel before the arrival of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Sunday, only two journalists moved freely along the blockaded street, flanked by crowds held back by police.

"I love my friend Lindsey Graham, but I think first we have to give a chance at peace, and that's why we outlined very clearly what a successful agreement would be", Menendez said.

Trump hopes to persuade Kim to completely abandon the arsenal of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that the North Koreans have spent more than a generation amassing.

On Sunday, as the global media swarmed Singapore and Kim arrived on a special Air China flight, just hours before Trump, there was still no word.

A Hong Kong-based entertainer who impersonates the North Korean leader said he was detained at Changi Airport after returning to Singapore ahead of the historic summit planned for Tuesday. Three planes took off in North Korea at about an hour's interval on Sunday - an IL-76, an Air China Boeing 747 and an ancient Ilyushin IL62 - leaving watchers in the dark about which one Kim was on.

Trump, 71, landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada.

"Thank you for all the donations you have been making to North Korea, well, me".

Another Pyongyang report quoting Kim Yong-nam, the nominal head of state, as telling leader Kim to achieve outstanding outcomes from the summit with the US has also drawn attention.

Washington is demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation (CVID) of the North, while Pyongyang has so far only made public pledges of its commitment to the denuclearisation of the peninsula - a term open to wide interpretation - while seeking security guarantees.

A US official cited by Bloomberg said Trump intends to meet one-on-one with Kim at the start of the meeting.

"From our point of view it's important that the meeting take place, and that the meeting sets developments on a new trajectory - one that will be conducive to the security and stability of the region", he said.

Balakrishnan had visited Washington earlier in the week and met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton.

It will be the first time that a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader have met.

US allies are anxious that Trump could upend decades of worldwide precedent, NPR's Mara Liasson reported on Weekend Edition Sunday.

Kim later met Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and was seen to be smiling broadly during the encounter. "North Korea summit again", said Shim Nu-ri, a teacher who lives in Seoul.

Despite the high stakes for the meeting, Trump has said that he would know within seconds of the start of the talks whether Kim was serious about abandoning nuclear weapons.

There are also signs that South Korea, China and Russian Federation are preparing to increase economic ties with North Korea, should a nuclear deal be reached. North Korea saw that as a threat - Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi was ultimately overthrown and killed after doing a deal with the U.S.
