Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan wrapped up a visit to Washington and Pyongyang on Saturday and told reporters in Beijing that both sides had expressed thanks for Singapore's work to prepare for the summit on a short notice.

That meeting is expected to last a couple of hours and include a working lunch at the luxury resort on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

The first meeting that the pair had on their schedule was one-on-one, accompanied only by translators.

Shortly before the leaders met, Moon's chief of staff wrote on Facebook that the summit reminded him of his child's birth.

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un concluded an extraordinary summit Tuesday with lofty promises by the American president to take care of a "very unsafe problem" and Kim forecasting "major change for the world". "The world will see a major change".

The actual text of the document was visible in a picture from the signing, after Trump held it up to show their signatures.

"President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", said the statement.

The issue was "not part of the equation right now", he said, but "at some point, I hope it will be".

He recently faced a barrage of criticismsover his trade policy, including the imposition of punitive tariffs on US' top trading partners; proposal for readmission of Russian Federation to the group; the abrupt withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal earlier this year; and reneging on the Paris Agreement on climate change last year.

Trump seemed to hold an optimistic take on Kim's intentions, saying that the dictator "really wants to do something I think terrific for their country".

The US side however reportedly believes that an immediate tangible outcome is unlikely following the meet. "I came here after overcoming all obstacles".

"We may be able to recoup a little bit of that but I think it is a cost that we're willing to pay and it's our contribution to an global endeavour, which is in our profound interests", said Lee during a press conference held at the summit's worldwide Media Centre.

The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn labelled the President a "mentally deranged USA dotard". "In the past, old practices and prejudices worked against us and placed many obstacles in our way, but we overcame all of them and we are here today".

At times, the video appeared to address Kim directly, suggesting he could make a choice that would open North Korea to new investment and step into a starring role in a moment in history with Trump. No prior White House would send the president into a summit that has not been pre-scripted with guaranteed results.
