Trump says N.Korea still a nuke threat

Regarding suspension of the exercises, South Korea's Defence Ministry said, "South Korea and the US made a decision to delay two of KMEP (drills) indefinitely, which was going to take place within the next three months".

SEOUL, South Korea The U.S. military said it moved 100 wooden coffins to the inter-Korean border to prepare for North Korea's returning of the remains of American soldiers who have been missing since the 1950-53 Korean War.

"This is a part of follow-up measures after the North Korea-U.S. summit and South Korea-North Korea summit".

It could signal North Korea is willing to include a moratorium on satellite launches in addition to their missile and nuclear tests, which has been a point of contention in past agreements and derailed negotiations in the past.

Richard Downes, executive director of the Coalition of Families of Korean & Cold War POW/MIAs, said last week that he had been told the North may have the remains of more than 200 American service members that were likely recovered from land during farming or construction and could be easily returned.

Earlier, during the historic meet in Singapore, the two leaders had signed a statement committing to full "denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula while the United States had chose to give "security guarantees". While the USA military preparations suggest that the repatriation of war remains could be imminent, it remains unclear when and how it would occur.

The suspension of the exercises was regarded as a major win for Pyongyang as well as for regional superpower and North Korea ally, China.

It was not immediately clear which North Korean test sites Trump was referring to and U.S. officials familiar with current intelligence on North Korea's nuclear and missile test sites said there was no evidence of new moves to dismantle any sites since Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12.

Kim's visit to Beijing, while expected, is one way for China to highlight its crucial role in US efforts to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear program.

At a news conference after the meeting with Kim in Singapore, Trump announced that he would halt what he called "very provocative" and expensive regular military exercises that the United States holds with South Korea.

"I expect they will talk about the path going forward and where priorities should lie", Glaser said. Nationalities will be determined when the remains are tested in the US. The biggest concern is that the "maximum pressure" that contributed to the North coming to the negotiation table is cracking without any substantial progress in dismantling the North's nuclear capability.

On June 19, U.S. and S Korea announced their decision to suspend Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise (joint military exercise). North Korea's posturing could be China's way of leveraging its involvement in negotiations versus the $50 Billion worth of tariffs imposed by Trump's administration.
