Buck-a-beer details confirmed, Ontario brewery announces participation

Posted August 10, 2018

Outside the brewery Tuesday, people gathered to protest the buck-a-beer program and other changes made by the Ford Government.

The Liberals had cited the government's "social responsibility" mandate for the 25-cent increase in beer prices at the time.

Brewers would not be required to charge less, however, and the lower minimum price would not apply to draft beer, nor would it include the bottle deposit.

The government is offering incentives like prime shelf real estate, free LCBO advertising and other perks to encourage brewers to lower their prices to $1 in time for Labour Day.

The Tories have said a return to buck a beer would see more competition in the beer market without affecting the province's revenues from beer and wine taxes, which government documents show brought in roughly $589 million in 2016-2017.

"Lowering the price of alcohol carries implications and risks for public safety", MADD Canada said in a statement. "They created a new rule, another piece of red tape that made a buck-a-beer illegal", Mr. Ford said.

Now, with Ford rolling back the legislation to allow buck-a-beer again, as he promised during the summer election campaign, the rock-bottom price is expected to fall before Labour Day. The price floor will affect beer that contains an alcohol percentage below 5.6%.

"Lower alcohol prices can lead to increased consumption, particularly among those with alcohol problems, and among young people, and that increased consumption can in turn lead to increased alcohol-related problems, including impaired driving".

If you're looking for a cheap brew in Ford's "buck-a-beer" era, head to Prince Edward County, Ont.

He said he could not find any brewery in Ontario now selling beer at the current minimum price of $30 for a 24-pack. Lakeport, the brewery that adopted and popularized "buck-a-beer" in the past before being purchased by Labatt, also still sells for just $1.60 a can.

"You definitely won't see #FreshGLB take part in this", the Toronto-based Great Lakes Brewery wrote on Twitter.

Sons of Kent Brewing Co., Chatham "We take our brewing processes and the quality of our ingredients very seriously".

"I want people to have a fair price but you can't keep raising the taxes provincially and federally on our product", Ladell said. "It's interesting that there is nobody at the $30 floor", said Scott Simmons, president of the Ontario Craft Brewers Association.

In the meantime, there are already plenty of beers that sell for cheap in Ontario.
