Nvidia's new GeForce RTX 2080: everything you need to know

Posted August 21, 2018

That's the biggest difference between Nvidia's new RTX graphics cards, announced today, and the GTX line that came before it.

Crypto slowdown: This real-time ray tracing capability should help juice sales of Nvidia's graphics chips for gaming, and that could be excellent timing for the company.

In other news, in the same blog-post, NVIDIA also posted a PCB shot and shows a photo of the new vapor chamber which covers the TU104 GPU (RTX 2080).

To show off what you can do with the card, NVIDIA showed off a few games including Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In terms of the lightning, the new RTX 2080 cards can provide up to 10 Giga Rays of lighting for ray tracing.

The 2070 starts at $499, while the 2080 starts at $699, while the 2080 Ti starts at $999.

"Turing opens up a new golden age of gaming, with realism only possible with ray tracing, which most people thought was still a decade away", said Jensen Huang, founder, and CEO of NVIDIA, speaking before Gamescom, the world's largest gaming expo. If you look deeper and closer at the video it is FILLED with hints, and unofficially, it reveals the name of the to be releas.

We all had an idea of what to expect from the keynote thanks to Nvidia's Siggraph showcase a week earlier that outlined the power of the company's new Turing GPU architecture.

Nvidia will sell the new RTX cards through partners such as Asus, EVGA, and Gigabyte.

So far, Nvidia has not announced when it will launch lower-end models of the RTX series. Ray-Tracing will only be supported on these cards, so if you're looking for the absolute best that's more than just a resolution change, these cards are it. It offers 45 trillion RTX ops per second, several times the performance of a Titan X. The 2070 offers higher performance than the $1,200 Titan XP, Huang said.

You can check out all the video below, alongside a trailer dedicated to Battlefield V showing pretty much the same things but in a much more condensed way. Fortunately for us, there will be three triple-A titles that will fully support NVIDIA's ray-tracing technology at launch. Developers include EA, Square Enix, EPIC Games, and more. The RTX series also dedicates a significant level of support to advanced VR rendering, which is good news for anyone running a device on their PC.

From a purely visual point of view, however, it's hard not to be impressed with the fact that actual games released this year, on hardware that's going to be available in less than a month, are going to have real-time ray tracing built into them.
