Glitch Inducing Message Reportedly Crashing PS4s, Users Urged To Change Settings

Posted October 15, 2018

Users posting in the PS4 subreddit have been describing the problem, although it remains unclear how widespread it is.

Reddit user Qraeshawn said: "I had a player named Zilla-Trickz that sent me 7 messages saying: Fortnite [] 3, but the heart was an emoji".

Some users have reported that not only opening the messages will cause the console to "brick", but even just receiving the notification can be enough to carry the exploit.

Reddit users have given directions on how they have recovered from the crash.

PlayStation 4 owners around the world have been struck by a messaging bug, that makes the entire console crash.

According to those affected by the glitch, which appears similar to "text bomb" messaging exploits that have plagued iOS, they receive a message, their controllers and sound outputs fail and resetting the console results in continual error loops.

What do you think about PlayStation having such an exploit in their system?

It important to note that the bug affects only the account that received the message, so if you have other accounts set up, you can use them to restore the damaged one without losing your data. If you have trustworthy friends, selecting friends only will do the trick.

From a web browser, visit the PSN Privacy setting page, then sign in with your PS4 account credentials. "Messages" from there and choose from the same options mentioned previously.

The advice from PlayStation Support is to delete the message on mobile and boot their consoles into safe mode, but many players are advising others to change their message settings in response to this new hack.

Turn off the PS4 system by pressing the power button on the front panel.
