Another 36 second prize tickets were sold, each matching five of six white balls, earning 34 of them $1 million, while a pair included the optional Megaplier to win $3 million.

The Powerball jackpot escaped capture Wednesday night and rolled to an impressive $750 million with a cash option of $428.6 million for the October 27 drawing.

The $1.537 billion jackpot was just shy of the largest ever in the United States, behind January 2016's $1.586 billion Powerball prize. Ticket sales in MA for that drawing totaled more than $32 million, officials said.

Drawings are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Powerball has had 21 drawings in a row without a jackpot victor.

On Wednesday night, when it was at $620 million, the Powerball jackpot looked sort of puny given all the attention lavished on the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in SC on Tuesday.

But the South Carolina Education Lottery has a message for the person or group with the lucky ticket.
