At the evening's State Dinner, Prince Charles spoke of the bonds between the people of the United Kingdom and The Gambia, saying, "We have also been fortunate to meet so many people who are making a profound difference to this partnership, whether British or Gambian or, indeed, one of the countless people who have a home in both countries and are, in so many ways, a living bridge between us".

Then in 1977, the Queen's first born, Prince Charles, visited the country for the first time.

Ahead of the trip, Prince Charles shared a message saying he was looking forward to "meeting so many of you".

Prince Charles of Britain on Thursday praised Gambians for rejecting "autocratic" rule and giving democracy a chance.

He called on the two countries to commit to addressing The Gambia's urgent needs such as resource depletion, youth unemployment and rapid urbanisation with the help of Commonwealth member states.

"We are friends and partners, and once again we are both members of the Commonwealth family of nations", the prince said in Banjul.

But his reign began to fall in December 2016, when he suffered an electoral defeat at the hands of Barrow, the opposition leader. He flew into self-imposed exile in Equatorial Guinea.
