Malibu residents ordered out as California wildfire nears

Pepperdine University shut down its Malibu and Calabasas campuses and initiated shelter-in-place protocols as the fire roared southward, sweeping into the Santa Monica mountains.

The Woolsey Fire burned over 9,000 acres near Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills north of the 101 Freeway Thursday, but Friday morning it jumped across the highway near Liberty Canyon Road in Agoura. In Northern California, a blaze visible by satellite consumed the town of Paradise on Thursday and had burned almost 110 square miles by Friday morning.

Also burning in Ventura County was the Hill Fire, which grew to 10,000 acres by Thursday night, officials said.

"The first part of this fuel bed had not seen fire for many years". It too has jumped the 101 near Chesebro Road, according to Ventura County Fire, and is moving south near Liberty Canyon Road.

The city of Malibu has reduced the scope a mandatory evacuation order for the beachside community as a wildfire approaches.

Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire is heading towards the ocean, punctuating the message with the declaration: "Imminent threat!"

Mass evacuations were ordered in California last night as wildfires spread quickly, fanned by powerful winds.

Resident Shari Bernacett told the Associated Press that she "knocked on doors, yelled and screamed" to get mobile home residents to leave as fire consumed the hillside. "Just landed back home and had one hour to pack up and evacuate our home. I pray everyone is safe".
