Democrats Seek Green New Deal to Address Climate Change 7 February 2019

The condemnation against Ocasio-Cortez was swift on Thursday as everyday conservatives and right-wing news outlets slammed the freshman lawmaker over the plan. "Right now what we are seeing is the violation of human rights", Ocasio-Cortez said.

Democrats launched a sweeping plan Thursday to transform the US economy to combat climate change and create thousands of jobs in renewable energy, signaling its likely elevation as a central campaign issue in 2020 despite President Donald Trump's failure to mention climate change in his State of the Union address.

Conservatives were also critical of a part of the plan that called for every building in the U.S.to be upgraded or replaced to make them more energy efficient.

Yet, other Democrats aren't so sure what Ocasio-Cortez is thinking either.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped eight Democrats to serve on a special committee to address climate change.

It also calls for new projects to modernise USA transportation infrastructure, de-carbonise the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, make buildings and homes more energy efficient and increase land preservation. It describes a 10-year "economic mobilization" that would phase out fossil fuel use and overhaul the nation's infrastructure while building whole new layers into the existing social safety net.

The so-called Green New Deal proposed by progressive U.S. Democrats is vague, flawed and controversial.

At least a half dozen Democratic 2020 presidential hopefuls have said they would adopt Green New Deal policies, without offering specifics.

The Democrats are likely to meet resistance to their proposal in Congress, especially in the Republican-controlled Senate. She also pointed to her involvement in various other committees and subcommittees that will also tackle climate change initiatives.

Pelosi welcomed the introduction of the resolution Thursday but told reporters during her weekly press conference that she had not read it yet.

The legislation is already backed by more than 40 House Democrats, Bloomberg reports, including House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern.

Her website "promotes off-shore drilling under Energy issues-the very thing she wants to eliminate with her "Green New Deal" that dropped today", tweeted the RSC. She said she's spoken with Pelosi about the climate crisis on several occasions and sees her as an ally in the fight.

Although Pelosi has experience as speaker pushing climate change policies under previous administrations, more progressive members have questioned her eagerness to support an ambitious new climate proposal.

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Senator Ed Markey on Thursday laid out the goals of a Green New Deal to transform the United States economy to combat climate change while creating thousands of jobs in renewable energy.

The full document outlines five major goals (on top of numerous smaller goals), over a dozen major projects to achieve said goals, and multiple requirements for completing the projects in a manner consistent with the resolution's climate and justice goals.
