Freezing rain to hit Chicago area Sunday night

The weather agency says the storm system may have a significant impact on travel on Tuesday. The Tuesday evening drive will not be great, but it will be better than Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning in the metro area.

Snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and strong winds are all in the forecast at various points throughout the day.

The latest winter storm will start to materialize on Tuesday morning and is expected to develop throughout the day.

Four to seven inches of snow and ice one-tenth to two-tenths is predicted for Orange and Sullivan counties.

Foothill locations may also see higher totals of snow over three inches and rivers and streams are likely to rise in parts of California from the combination of rain and melting snow.

MONDAY: Snow showers in the evening will give way to a mixture of rain and snow overnight. That period of sleet and freezing rain lasts throughout the morning and into the early afternoon before a transition to plain rain takes over for the rest of Tuesday afternoon.

A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from Monday afternoon until Tuesday morning. Overnight, about 2 inches of snow fell and accumulated in South Jersey. It could get about 3 inches of snow with a quarter inch of ice on top of that.

A wintry mix is likely to pass through the region before changing into rain along the coast Tuesday. The evening commute will be highly impacted.
