The Biggest Supermoon of the Year Is Coming Tuesday

Posted February 23, 2019

The combination of the two means a supermoon appears 14% bigger and 30% brighter.

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit at the same time that it is full. When it is closest to the earth, it is called perigee while when it is farthest, it is called apogee.

The moon looks particularly large because it's at its closet point to Earth.

A new moon at perigee is also often referred to as a supermoon.

November 2016 was the closest that the moon has been to the earth.

The snow moon becomes officially full on February 19, 2019, at 10:53 am EST (1553 GMT), and it will be about six hours past perigee.

The full moon - also dubbed the "Snow Moon" - will peak on Tuesday morning, February 19, at 8:54 a.m. Arizona time (10:54 a.m. EDT), according to NASA.

Not technical astronomical term, the phrase super moon was first coined by Richard Nolle in 1979 to describe when the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to the earth in any orbit. This Super Moon makes its appearance not long after the last one, which occurred on January 21.

Mr Kerss said: "From London, the Snow Moon rises at 5.11pm and will shortly after loom low on the eastern horizon".

This makes it appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. Other names include mid-winter moon, ice moon and storm moon. This closest distance will take place at 4:07AM on February 19, though the moon will look larger and brighter than normal starting tonight and again on Wednesday. In fact, a supermoon is also likely in the month of March as well.

Here's what to know about the upcoming "super snow moon" - and what the best time is to see it.

A psychic healer identified only as Snow Owl, who lives in Barangay Ponong in Siquijor town in Siquijor, said the supermoon would be the best time to cleanse and renew the energy.

And if you miss this one, there will be another supermoon on March 19 - the last of three supermoons visible at the start of this year. The moon lit up the sky at about 7.30pm, but a bout of cloudy weather later kept it hidden until about 8.30pm, when it reappeared.

A supermoon is a new or full moon that happens at the time of the month when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit.
