Captain Marvel Weekend Numbers Surpass $455 Million

It did that and then some. The Marvel Studios film took in $153 million domestically on its opening weekend, blowing past initial estimates that Captain Marvel would open to $135 million. That makes it the seventh-largest domestic opening weekend for a Marvel Studios movie, coming in above Guardians of the Galaxy and below Iron Man 3. Nine of the Top 10 Captain Marvel locations in China were IMAX. Not only is it the second largest opening for a superhero movie, but it also has the sixth best worldwide opening of all time.

The North Jersey Record reports theatre patrons at the AMC Theatre initially didn't seem to notice Larson, who was dressed in a Captain Marvel sweatsuit.

To combat the down-voting issue in advance of "Captain Marvel", Rotten Tomatoes (which doesn't require users to verify that they've seen a movie that they're scoring) removed the ability to rate movies prior to release. "Captain Marvel" single-handedly chopped nearly 5 percent off that figure with a weekend that overall was up 47 percent from the same previous year.

Interestingly, Captain Marvel will also be seen in the conclusion of the Avengers franchise, Avengers: Endgame, which releases on April 26.

Last week's number one movie How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dropped to second place, taking in another $14.7 million.
