Man arrested after boy falls from balcony at USA shopping centre

Potts added that while both the victim and suspect are locals, there is no evidence that the suspect knew the victim ahead of the crime.

"(Through) our investigative work and witnesses that we've spoken to, we feel confident saying that the suspect threw the child off of the third floor. "But, as to why he did that, is still something we're looking into and trying to figure out", he said.

Landen was grabbed and thrown from the balcony onto the mall's tile flooring on Friday morning; Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, has been charged with attempted homicide.

A witness told WCCO that the child's mother was heard screaming after the incident.

'She was screaming "Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge".

Potts said he couldn't give an update on the boy's status, except to say that he's being cared for at the hospital and that his parents are with him.

A month later, in August 2015, Aranda told authorities he has "anger issues" when he was arrested on a felony property damage charge at the public library.

Police are still investigating what the motive was as well. "We think the mall is still a very safe place to go".

Landen's family launched a GoFundMe page to cover what is said to be "immense" medical and rehabilitation costs, and on Sunday a family friend shared an update about the little boy's recovery.

"The family doesn't know him and are completely clueless as to why this monster would target their family with his heinous act of violence".

On the first floor, laying face up between an escalator and the Michael Kors store, was a 5-year-old boy. Potts said there is no relationship between the suspect and the child or the child's family, and investigators are working to determine why the man threw the boy.

Aranda was banned from the mall for one year.

Potts said Bloomington police have had three prior contacts with Aranda in 2015 - two of which were connected to incidents at Mall of America.

Aranda has been involved in incidents before at the Mall of America, one resulting in an arrest, Potts said.

Then in October 2015, Aranda returned to the Mall of America again - in violation of his no-trespass order - and harassed and assaulted a woman inside a restaurant there, records show. In this case, he started fighting with the restaurant's manager, causing frightened diners to leave, according to CNN.
